Oh, it was bound to happen sooner or later. My mom finally posed the question: "So, what's this Facebook and how do I get onto it?" My dear ole mother is pretty tech savvy for a senior, but I knew there was one security setting which I needed to make sure was switched on before I let her loose onto Facebook: Secure Browsing, or HTTPS connection.
Earlier this year Facebook finally turned on this much needed feature, the same security measure you'll notice turned on by default when you visit an online retailer, banking site or any other service where funds are exchanged. By using a Secured Browsing (https) connection you help ensure the information coming and going from your Facebook account remains private, creating an authenticated and encrypted connection between you and any site that uses https. It's not on by default, so follow these 4 easy steps below and give your privacy a boost.
Here's how to make your Facebook account instantly 100% more secure:
- while signed into your Facebook account, go to the upper right and click "Account"
- choose "Account Settings"
- scroll down the list and you'll see "Account Security". Choose "change".
- Checkmark "Browse Facebook on a secure connection (https) whenever possible" under "Secure Browsing (https)".
Wasn't that easy? You can also check "Send me an email", which will notify you when a new computer or mobile device logs into this account, just in case you want to make sure nobody else is logging into your account from another location.
