The Kitchen is the Heart and Soul of the Home

The Kitchen is the Heart and Soul of the Home

As part of his enduring love of all things Terence Conran (the English designer and restauranteur) Maxwell recently brought home a tattered old copy of Conran's now out-of-print Kitchen Book and we have barely put it down. It's the best resource I've ever seen for making beautiful and functional kitchens.

It doesn't just show pretty kitchens — though it does do that — it also helps the reader understand how and why kitchens keep the spirit of the home alive.

It's the book I've always wanted to write. (Oops, Conran beat me to it. Twenty years ago.) Here is the first sentence:

A kitchen provides physical and spiritual nourishment, and for many homes is now the heart and soul of family life.

You see why I'm in love with this book, don't you?

How to Turn a Tapered Lamp Shade into a Drum Shade
We all have a lampshade or two around the house that just feels a little dowdy and outdated. Like most things, the popular fabrics and shapes of shades go in and out of fashion. But rather than tossing out an unwanted tapered shade, how about spending a bit of time (and very little money!) to convert it to a much more current drum shade, in whatever fabric strikes your fancy. Katie shows us how easy it is in this step-by-step how to post...

Corina — an Emmy award winning hair and makeup artist — lives in a quintessential Spanish casita which she first shared in a House Call: Corina's Starlet Bungalow. Her home sits inside a classic courtyard complex that was originally designed for the starlets and writers to retreat to during their short stays in Hollywoodland. Naming Kelly Wearstler and a love of retro Hollywood Regency as her two biggest influences, Corina has created a clean classy look on an affordable budget.

I've yet to become a fan of Lulu DK's fabrics and wallpapers, but I LOVE her collages. Whimsical, colorful, suggestive and FRESH, they speak like a happy madwoman. Released in book form in 2008, this is her first show at Christiane Celle's SoHo gallery. They're worth seeing close up.

Shopper's Guide
Shopper's Guide
Since the 1980s, people have been declaring that the LP is dead, yet DJs and vinylphiles have kept it alive all these years. Cool album art, quality sound, and cheap prices on vintage records are all reasons for holding onto your LPs, but the big drawback is the hulking amount of space they consume. If you're dedicated to preserving your record collection in tact, there are some good storage options at all price points — here are eight.
