The Geek's Emergency Help Doc for Valentine's Day

Oh Valentine's Day, have you already returned so soon?

A day both beloved and dreaded, of extravagance and chintz, filled with thoughtful gestures, yet still oft forgotten (Google Calendar is your friend). The 14th day of the 2nd month of the year can mean many things to many people: hallmarked sentiments, pink and red confettied floral arrangements, and possibly even a box of cloying confectionary delights from that heralded figure of the drug store aisles, Saint Russell Stover, all to punctuate what the heart feels through symbolic gestures.

But not everyone's definition of "romantic" falls under those traditional expectations, especially amongst the freaks and geeks set we belong to. No my friend, for every wanna-be Mr. Darcy*, there are those pragmatic Lloyd Doblers out there who choose to show their love with more down-to-earth acts or gifts that don't require a down payment that may rely upon a kidney donation. Then again, there are also countless clueless Georges out there, more Costanza than Clooney, who need all the help they can get. In any case, if you find yourself stuck without ideas just a few days before V-Day, we're here to help…

*Did you know in 2010 scientists named a protein sex pheromone found in male mice urine, Darcin, after the most beloved/annoying literary figure in history? Apparently female mice find the compound irresistible in crazed states. How utterly appropriate. Please send hate mail to mrdarcy@apartmenttherapy.com.

Onward, to our roundup of very best Valentine's Day gift ideas...
